SPECIAL SHABBAT PROGRAM TO CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH!

"Jazz: The Jewish and Black American Story"

Presented by Mark Lipson

As we commemorate Juneteenth, we invite you to join us for a fascinating exploration of the connections between Black and Jewish Americans through the history of jazz. From its roots in Black American communities to its growth as a uniquely American art form, jazz tells a story of creativity, resilience, and cultural collaboration. Mark Lipson will trace the ways Black and Jewish communities influenced one another and contributed to the development of a musical tradition that transformed American culture. Through music and history, this program celebrates the enduring power of human connection and the rich legacy that can emerge when different communities come together to create something extraordinary.

AND LATER AT THE ONEG SHABBAT

Following the program with Mark Lipson, at the Oneg Shabbat on June 19, we invite you to learn more about the REC while helping assemble hygiene kits that REC will be distributing directly to the unhoused youth and young adults throughout the Detroit area. The Ruth Ellis Center, or REC, offers programs and services from housing and healthcare to education and advocacy to LGBTQ+ youth and young adults, ages 13-30. They provide a safe space where every young person can thrive, helping them build a vision for a positive future.

Their mission reflects values that are deeply important to us at CHJ: dignity, safety, opportunity, and belonging. We will be honoring the remarkable legacy of Ruth Ellis, a Detroit activist whose home became a place of refuge, community, and support for LGBTQ+ individuals during a time when few safe spaces existed.
