We define a Jew as someone who identifies with the history, culture and future of the Jewish people. In practice this means that anyone who desires to join our community is welcomed into full participation in our congregation. This viewpoint is consistent with our humanistic value system and with our understandings about the nature of Judaism.
Additionally, participation in our community in no way compels people to choose between their family’s heritage and identity and belonging to our Humanistic Jewish community. People can and do feel simultaneous attachments to a variety of cultural groups and practices.
Humanistic Judaism does offer conversion (sometimes called "adoption" into Humanistic Judaism). At our congregation we offer the option of a ceremony to affirm belonging / conversion for those who find it meaningful. Please see the discussion of “Who is a Jew” on the page about “Our Beliefs.”
